If you’re thinking about eloping in Colorado, but want an easily accessible location for family & friends, then why not have an Alta Lakes Observatory wedding? You can dine beneath string lights and stars, have your ceremony amongst the wildflowers and mountain peaks, and celebrate with your loved ones at this cozy mountain lodge – it really does have it all!

About The Observatory at Alta Lakes

The Observatory at Alta Lakes is a private backcountry cabin nestled in the mountains 13 miles from Telluride, Colorado. This local wedding venue was constructed in the early 70s with local timber and was named for its epic stargazing views!

As a remote, yet accessible wedding location, it can accommodate a wedding party of up to 45 people for both your wedding day ceremony and reception. However, no matter your group size, if you have an Alta Lakes Observatory wedding, you’ll be able to make full use of the amenities: the lake, canoes, Stand-Up Paddleboarding (SUPs), hot tub, outdoor fire pit, and the cozy lodge!

Why you should consider The Observatory if you’re planning an intimate wedding in Colorado

Honestly, it is truly a one-of-a-kind wedding location and one of the few wedding venues above 11,000 feet. You’re surrounded by majestic mountain peaks, wildflowers, and a gorgeous alpine lake at the back of the property – it’s perfect for couples who want a mix of adventure with the accessibility of a wedding venue.

The Observatory features that quintessential Colorado mountain cabin feel: a cozy fireplace, a backyard big enough for a ceremony and a fun reception, and views that take your breath away! You could go canoeing on the alpine lake for your Alta Lakes Observatory wedding photos, go explore the nearby mountains, play yard games with family, and have a wonderful candlelit reception dinner.

A lot of the epic locations in the San Juan Mountains require an off-roading jeep adventure or long hike, but all you need is a 4WD vehicle to get to The Observatory at Alta Lakes – this is why it’s the perfect spot for your intimate wedding in the San Juan Mountains.

Plus, this venue is pet-friendly, so your furry friend can join you on your special day. As a side note: there aren’t many pet-friendly rentals or venues in the San Juan Mountains that can also host a large group, so The Observatory really is a gem!

Alta Lakes Observatory Wedding Ceremony & Reception space

At The Observatory at Alta Lakes, you can have your ceremony right on the shore of an alpine lake, nestled beneath the peaks of Mt. Wilson and Palmyra peaks, and honestly, it can’t get better than that!

There is also outdoor space for you to hold a reception and a candlelit dinner. However, there is no covered ceremony or reception area, so we recommend renting a banquet tent for unpredictable weather (rain, snow, hail).

Guest size for your wedding

Alta Lakes Observatory can accommodate up to 75 people – including the wedding party – for your wedding day. Even if you want to have a “just us” elopement, it’s great to have the place for your ceremony and lodging all rolled into one. Plus, you can always go on adventures around the area and explore the countless 4×4 or hiking trails.

Wedding lodging at Alta Lakes Observatory

Alta Lakes Observatory also offers on-site lodging for up to 12 guests. There are 3 bedrooms which include 1 king bed, 2 queen beds, 2 twin pull out beds, and 2 full bunk beds, as well as a fully equipped kitchen, and a lovely living room. If you’re having over 12 guests, we recommend booking lodging nearby in Mountain Village or Telluride.

Vendors at Alta Lakes Observatory

The Observatory at Alta Lakes does not include catering in their wedding packages. However, the space comes with a full kitchen – great for a private chef or external catering. You may use any vendors you choose, but if you do need help, they have a list of preferred vendors, including Alpine Rentals for furniture and Counter Culture for catering.

Alta Lakes Observatory Wedding cost

As of March 2025, weddings at Alta Lakes Observatory range from $8000 to $17,000 depending on guest size.

For weddings with 12 guests or less (including the wedding party) the rate is $8000 and includes a 3 day/2 night stay.

Weddings between 13-20 people have a rate of $11,000 with a 3 day/2 night stay for up to 12 guests at the lodge. Weddings between 30-50 people have a rate of $15,000 and include 4 days and 3 nights. You will be required to have event insurance with general liability and alcohol liability coverage for any wedding of over 12 people.

Choosing your Alta Lakes Observatory Wedding date

During winter and spring months, The Observatory is only accessible by snowmobile (pretty cool though right?) and as such, can only have weddings with less than 12 guests. The snowy landscapes and fun winter activities are definitely worth it, though. Plus, The Observatory at Alta Lakes does provide snowmobile transportation at an additional cost.

From Mid-June to Mid-October, you may have up to 75 guests at your Alta Lakes Observatory wedding. During the summer, you can expect epic mountain views and meadows filled with wildflowers. However, summer afternoons may bring storms, so we always recommend being prepared and renting a wedding tent just in case.

How to plan an Alta Lakes Observatory Wedding or elopement

  1. Contact The Observatory at Alta Lakes for full pricing and date availability
  2. Nail down a date and book the venue
  3. Book your intimate wedding or elopement photographer – many elopement photographers also help with planning so it’s great to have them as one of the first vendors booked. We also suggest booking a videographer at this time if you want one.
  4. Book lodging in the towns if you are expecting more than 12 guests
  5. Book caterer or private chef
  6. Hire furniture rentals (tables, chairs, benches, etc)
  7. Hire Hair and Make-up Artist and any other vendors you want for your wedding day
  8. Order attire and details like rings, vow books, guest books, etc
  9. Develop a back-up plan in case of rain
  10. Get your Colorado marriage license in Telluride at the San Miguel County Clerk
  11. Have an epic intimate wedding or elopement at the Alta Lakes Observatory!

Other options if you want to elope in nature

Having a wedding at Alta Lakes Observatory really is perfect for those wanting above 12 guests and want to have an easily accessible location without the need for a specific 4×4 vehicle or hiking – a great option for anyone with mobility issues as well.

However, if you’re planning a “just us” elopement or an elopement with under 12 guests, there are some truly epic elopement locations. Most of those locations do require either hiking or access to a 4×4, but for couples who truly want a Colorado adventure on their wedding day, it’s a great way to elope in one of the wildest places in the U.S. Plus, we include location recommendations in all of our packages!
